Successful PhD Defence

On 11 December 2025, Oleksii Bashkanov from the Human–Machine Interaction research group at the Research Campus STIMULATE at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg successfully completed his doctoral colloquium. In his dissertation entitled ‘Multimodal Deep Learning for Enhanced Prostate Cancer Diagnosis and Grading,’ he focused on the development of AI-supported methods for improved prostate cancer diagnostics.

The study investigated a multimodal approach that combines MRI imaging with AI-based analysis of clinical patient data. By merging these data sources, it was possible to develop a diagnostic system that improves the accuracy of prostate cancer detection and has the potential to significantly reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.

The dissertation was reviewed by Prof Dr Christian Hansen (Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg), Prof Dr Andrey Fedorov (Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital) and Prof Dr Vasileios Belagiannis (FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg). The international composition of the review panel underscored the breadth and relevance of the work.

Part of the research was conducted in cooperation with the ALTA Clinic, which contributed clinical expertise and practical perspectives to the project, thereby supporting the transfer of research results into medical application.

Congratulations to Oleksii on completing this phase of his academic career! 🎓
